Call
We are excited to announce the Research & Design Competition for this year’s conference! This competition challenges participants to envision and create innovative solutions to clearly identified problems within the scope of this year’s conference theme.
The competition will run across two categories:
- Student: Open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in an academic institution.
- Professional: Open to industry professionals, researchers, and practitioners.
Competition Areas
Proposals should address one of the following areas:
- HCI4AI in Social Impact – Topics in this area include, but are not limited to:
- Healthcare and wellbeing
- Education and learning
- Environmental sustainability
- Accessibility and universal design
- Digital inclusion
- HCI4AI in Emerging Technologies – Topics in this area include, but are not limited to:
- Mixed reality and spatial computing
- AI-powered interfaces
- Natural user interfaces
- Wearable technology
- Internet of Things
- HCI4AI in Future of Work – Topics in this area include, but are not limited to:
- Remote collaboration tools
- Productivity enhancement
- Human-AI collaboration
- Workplace accessibility
- Skills development and training
Submission Guidelines
Submission to the R&D track involves two phases. In Phase 1, authors submit their proposal as an Extended Abstract:
- Paper Length: Proposals should not exceed 4 pages. Appendices are not permitted.
- Optional Video: Authors are free to decide on the format, for example a recorded pitch, demonstration of system prototype, concept pitch.
- Formatting: Please adhere to the Electronic Workshops in Computing paper format. Authors should submit their proposal in PDF format.
- Originality: Submissions must present original work not previously published or under review elsewhere.
All submissions will undergo a juried-by-committee process.
Please note the practical feasibility of your demo at the conference will also be considered. You are encouraged to contact the track chairs.
Accepted proposals will then enter Phase 2. At the conference, authors will pitch their work to a panel of expert judges. Each pitch will last 20 minutes with 10 minutes for Q&A.
The panel will judge pitches based on the following criteria:
- Innovation and originality (25%)
- Technical feasibility and implementation (20%)
- User-centered design approach (20%)
- Social impact and significance (20%)
- Presentation and documentation quality (15%)
Prizes
- Student:
- Winner: A voucher to the value of £300
- Runner-up: A voucher to the value of £200
- Professional:
- Winner: A voucher to the value of £300
- Runner-up: A voucher to the value of £200
All finalists will receive exhibition space at the conference alongside the Posters track and publication in the conference proceedings.

Accepted papers will be presented during the conference in oral sessions. At least one author must register and attend the conference to present the work.
Publication
Accepted full papers will be published in the conference proceedings, accessible via ScienceOpen.
